My husband took the two older kids camping this weekend and I decided to have some girlfriends over for a Homemade Meal. Yes, I know I make homemade meals, but this was a fun-in-the-kitchen homemade meal. I had the baby sleeping this afternoon and a quiet house, so I broke out the pasta machine and ice cream maker. I made fresh pasta, marinara, vanilla bean gelato and double chocolate cookies.
It may be a little more than your willing to do, but here’s the recipes if you want to try something new. It’s not very hard, just takes a little time.
3 1/2c. flour
Make a well and crack 4 eggs into the center. Begin to scramble the eggs with the fork, slowly incorporating the flour. Gradually make a dough and begin to knead to 3 minutes. Dough should be a little sticky and elastic. Wrap with plastic wrap and let sit 20 minutes at room temp.
Roll out, or crank in a pasta machine thin sheets. Cut into ravioli, fettucine, bow ties…..
Cook in boiling water 2-3 minutes!
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup sugar, plus 1/4 cup
- 4 egg yolks
- 1 vanilla bean
In a saucepan combine the milk, cream, vanilla bean, and 1/2 cup sugar over medium heat. Cook until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl whip the egg yolks with the remaining sugar using an electric mixer until the eggs have become thick and pale yellow, about 4 minutes. Pour 1/2 cup of the warm milk and cream mixture into the egg mixture and stir. Add this mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over very low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture becomes thick enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon, about 7 to 10 minutes. Place a strainer over a medium bowl and pour the warm mixture through the strainer. Chill mixture completely before pouring into an ice cream maker and follow manufacturer’s instructions to freeze.
We shared good food and good conversation. Thanks for the company!
