For the love of reading May 21, 2012

I have mentioned before about my book club and some of the wonderful books we have read.  Part of what I love about book club is that we rotate picking books.  I have read many books this past year that I would not have chosen for myself, but have enjoyed.  I also love sharing the excitement of reading a book, the mental pictures we created, how we wanted things to turn out or how we were surprised, and sharing other titles of books we have read to add to our “reading list”.

I either have a stack of “to be read” books in a pile by my bed, or a wish list of books to read.  I  either see what people around me are reading, or ask what they would recommend.

Two of the last books we have read for book club have dealt with women learning, often secretly, to read.  In Snowflower and the Secret Fan, they learn Nu Shu, a secret women’s only chinese language.  In Honolulu, the main character Jin, secretly desires to be educated and learn to read.  When she is secretly taught hangul, the Korean alphabet, her life takes a major turn.  Reading is so important not just for enjoyment, but for understanding and communication.

I have two young readers and I want to make sure to continue to cultivate their reading over the summer.  I have started book series that I read to them ( Harry Potter, Gregor the Overlander, Captain Underpants) and we have also found books that they enjoy to read on their own.

Here are some great summer reading programs to check out.  There are adult book clubs at libraries, or you can start your own.  Take an adventure this summer!
